Week of Nov 13 - 19

Your weekly look at what’s happening across Toronto’s vegan community

As always, I’ve been keeping an eye on what’s unfolding around the city this week, and there’s lots to cover.

A beloved local bakery is wrapping up its pop-up chapter, Wuxly is opening a new space, and there are several events worth checking out over the next few days.

You’ll also find an important activism update and a notable story from the wider vegan world.

Vegan-only

Buy Vegan — Your vegan-only catalogue for Canada

Everything listed is verified vegan and orderable in Canada. Compare prices across retailers, see where to buy, and skip the label decoding. It’s a catalogue of vegan products and point you to the shops that sell them. As a new site, feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

What it is (and isn’t)

  • Vegan-only catalogue: every item verified—no label decoding.

  • Canada-ready: listings checked for Canadian shipping or local availability.

  • Where to buy & price look-up: we strive to list all retailers so you can compare.

  • Not a storefront: we don’t sell; we point you to the places that do.

New this week:

This Canadian vegan company crafts a Blood Orange lip balm made with clean, plant-based ingredients that keep your lips soft and protected as the cold weather sets in. It delivers reliable moisture you can feel immediately, and it’s part of a full lineup of other natural flavours if you want to switch things up. A simple everyday essential that makes a real difference once the temperature drops.

New listings roll out weekly as we grow toward a comprehensive vegan database for Canadian shoppers. Let’s vote with our dollars—and Buy Vegan.

Activism:

  • Animal Justice is running an online mobilization campaign from November 11 to 25 urging people to contact CBC and ask them to cancel its “Bake it with Canadian Dairy Contest.” The organization highlights concerns about standard dairy-industry practices, including calf–mother separation, killing of male calves, confinement, and the slaughter of cows once their milk production drops, and encourages supporters to submit personalized messages through CBC’s feedback form. The group also notes broader issues such as the industry’s marketing and its impact on communities that are largely lactose intolerant.

World Vegan News:

  • In October, Miyoko’s Creamery entered an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) process (an alternative to bankruptcy) after determining it was unable to pay its debts in full. Miyoko Schinner, who founded the company in 2014 and was removed as CEO in 2022, mobilized a last-minute bid to reacquire the business, including raising over US$100,000 via crowdfunding from more than 1,600 donors. Despite the effort, she confirmed that her offer did not win: the company name, formulas and assets were sold to a higher bidder under the liquidation process, and she acknowledged that the liquidator was bound to accept the highest bid.
