Week of Mar 5 - 11

Vegandale is gone. What's replacing it and what that says about where the vegan world is heading.

Taken from the Batch Cooking Club last week

March is here and somehow winter still hasn't gotten the memo. It’s a slower week but things should be ramping up soon as the weather warms.

Here's what's in this week's edition:

  • Two events this weekend worth knowing about, including a cheese demo and a cozy café meetup

  • A community org celebrating a milestone, and a significant rebrand in the vegan festival world

Here we go…

This Week:

📅 Sunday, March 8
🕒 1:00–3:00 p.m.
📍 NUTTEA Nut Mylk Café, 637 Bloor St W

A small-group Sunday afternoon meetup hosted by Toronto Vegan Meetup, held at a fully vegan café. Attendees can expect nut-milk teas and vegan baked goods from Bad Attitude Bread in a casual, conversational setting. Open to vegans and non-vegans alike; no cover charge, but guests are asked to purchase a drink or treat from the café.

📅 Saturday, March 7
🕒 1:00–4:00 p.m.
📍 Good Rebel,1591 Dundas St. W.

Nateure's Food Co. founder Nate will be on-site sampling his vegan parmesan and feta cheeses. Attendees can try both products and take advantage of a 15% in-store discount on the day; the discount also applies online.

(Event details are accurate to the best of my knowledge at the time of publishing. Events are intended to be vegan, but details may change, please confirm directly with the organizer if you have specific concerns.)

Product of the Week

Each week, I share a vegan product I personally use or trust. Some links are affiliate links, at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I genuinely stand behind.

⭐ Spotlight: Bob’s Nutritional Yeast

A vegan pantry staple with a naturally cheesy, nutty flavour. Bob’s Red Mill Large Flake Nutritional Yeast is rich in B-vitamins (including B12) and provides protein, making it an easy way to add flavour and nutrition to popcorn, pasta, sauces, and roasted vegetables.

Worth Noting:

Wishbone Animal Rights Lab celebrated its third official anniversary on March 2, 2026. The Toronto-based hub offers space, an equipment lending library, a recording studio, and workshops to support animal rights activists and organizers across causes including veganism, lab animal advocacy, and wildlife. As a volunteer-driven, largely self-funded organization, Wishbone is currently fundraising via e-transfer or PayPal at [email protected].

Vegandale Retires Brand, Relaunches as Voenix

And now a word about whats happening with Vegandale. After 12 years, they have officially retired the brand, with several members of the original team launching a new concept called Voenix. Rather than positioning itself as a vegan festival, Voenix is being framed as an entirely new company built around fitness, DJ-fuelled outdoor events, and "animal-free eats," reflecting an unfortunate broader industry shift away from explicit vegan labelling toward wider cultural appeal. A Toronto ticket page has appeared at wearevoenix.com, though the site has limited operational details publicly available at this time. The rebrand has drawn some criticism in the vegan community, with commentators noting that a name change does not erase the controversies Vegandale faced, most notably a 2024 New York event that was widely dubbed the "Vegan Fyre Festival" after widespread vendor and attendee complaints.

I went to the very first Vegandale, and I still remember how exciting it felt. It was a big, celebratory event built around the vegan world. It had its problems. But its absence is still a sad day for me.
