Sad news for Planta

Tiramisù Cake from Nonna Lia
This week’s edition starts with a simple way to get out and connect over a vegan meal, followed by an important food recall notice affecting a vegan product sold locally.
There are also new developments involving one of the city’s most visible vegan restaurant groups that may shape what the scene looks like in the months ahead.
Lastly, I’ve included two newly added upcoming events for those planning ahead as well.
I hope everyone had a nice St. Patrick’s Day, and with Easter just around the corner there will likely be more seasonal offerings and gatherings to keep an eye on.
This Week:
📅 Saturday, March 21
🕒 12:00–2:00 p.m.
📍 638 Dundas St W
An informal group lunch at Greens Vegetarian Restaurant for vegans and anyone interested in plant-based dining. Participants are asked to keep their reservations updated to help the restaurant manage seating.
(Event details are accurate to the best of my knowledge at the time of publishing. Events are intended to be vegan, but details may change, please confirm directly with the organizer if you have specific concerns.)
Product of the Week
Each week, I share a vegan product I personally use or trust. Some links are affiliate links, at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I genuinely stand behind.
⭐ Spotlight: Element Botanicals Deodorant Crystal Clean Unscented, a made-in-Canada, natural deodorant that actually eliminates odour (doesn’t just mask it). I’ve used it daily for years now and, it feels weird to say, but it genuinely changed my life. It’s the best deodorant I’ve tried (natural or conventional): effective, gentle, and truly unscented. |

PLANTA’s bankruptcy case has now moved from restructuring into liquidation, which is a more serious stage and usually signals a wind-down rather than a recovery. Because the company’s website still lists its Toronto locations and continues taking reservations, it is not yet possible to say that the Toronto restaurants will be closing, but the filing does appear to cover the broader corporate business rather than a single out-of-market location. As of today, I could not find a public statement from PLANTA on its website, press page, or social channels addressing the this topic but, sadly, it is not looking good.
We ordered the vegan tiramisù cake from Nonna Lia and it was genuinely memorable. The dessert is rich and creamy with a generous layer of biscuit around the edges, giving each bite a balanced mix of texture and flavour. They state that it took six months of research and development to introduced this fully vegan made with house-made vegan ladyfingers dipped in 100% Arabica coffee and finished with cacao amaro. It works well as a personal treat or something to share at a gathering, and even comes decorated with a faux-leather ribbon that can be reused. We ordered the cake but there are smaller versions as well and also other cakes to choose from.

A food recall warning has been issued in Ontario for Delight Chocolate brand Dairy-free Chocolate vegan ice cream after milk was found to be undeclared on the label. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced the recall on March 17 following a consumer complaint, noting that reactions have been reported. The affected products, made by the Toronto-based company, were sold in Toronto including online, in 500 mL containers (UPC 6 27987 19729 7) and 112 mL sizes, with all codes impacted where milk is not listed.
